A Dream in May

I saw a salesman, i used to know
With his briefcase, black with some metallic grey
Imposing giant figure,
Something the size of monsters in cheap Japanese flicks

A deep laugh and confident

Then came the morning,
Why will i dream of a Salesman
Of all people, a Salesman ?
Was there a message in this for me Joseph?

Come morning, i was grey
I the Salesman,
Is this the great divine plan for me
Selling cars and shoes. A nightmare for paranoid dreamers, like us

Then i twisted and turned trying to find
the meaning behind
dream of salesman
salesman of dream
of salesman dream

Then i pinned this dream
Down to a piece i had read, that touched some cord:
"Writing poetry, they believed, catalyzed one part of a person, leaving the rest unaffected, leaving drunks, unemployables, and insurance SALESMAN capable at odd moments of authoring the sublime"

I need to touch the sublime
In the face of my own salesman-like mediocrity
I dream to touch the frontiers, to walk through,
What Faiz would call, "Dasht-e-tanhai", "Deserts of loneliness"
